Alive 2011 Summer Choir Tour
Alive followed God’s lead to Kansas for Tour 2011. We began our ministry at the Salvation Army in Garden City, Kansas. We worked almost all day weeding, painting, cleaning, organizing, sorting, and helping with the Day Camp kids. We also delivered invitations to the evening concert to homes in the blocks near the Salvation Army. We made a difference in the look of the buildings and in the hearts of those who came to the concert and just hung around with us. The leader indicated that a couple of his young people made a commitment to do a better job of leading by example as a result of our influence.
From Garden City we moved to Anthony, Kansas where we spent the better part of four days, Thursday through Sunday. Friday was a work day. We laminated and we laminated and we laminated and when we weren’t laminating we were painting shelves, cleaning and organizing pre-school children’s materials, and assembling VBS materials. We were told that the laminating for the pre-school had been building up for eight years. It was a full day.
Friday night and Saturday night were spent at the pool. Saturday also included a trip to the Alabaster Caverns on what proved to be the hottest day of any year in recent memory. Bank signs reported highs between 108° and 115°. The Caverns, at about 60° were a welcome respite. Sunday we sang in the morning services at Anthony Christian Church and presented a full concert in the evening service.
Monday we moved to Newton where we presented a concert at the Kansas Christian Home, the nursing home portion of a Christian retirement community. Earlier in the day we had the chance to clean in the home and visit with residents. They touched our lives and we hope God used us to make a difference in theirs.
Tuesday we moved to Liberal for our last concert. Liberal Christian Church meets in a renovated bank building. It is unique. It was so intriguing that one youth was overheard exclaiming, “Oh, I want to go to a bank church!” By this time the group was tired but we prayed and clearly sensed the touch of the Holy Spirit as we ministered to possibly the smallest yet most responsive congregation. We were blessed. The music was strong and the message of the clear choice between walking with God or walking away was used by Him to refocus our lives and the lives of those we ministered to. We are grateful to our church and families who make these opportunities possible. Singing at home was a rich blessing and a great evening of fellowship with our church family.
