Key Words and Terms

hupostasis: “assurance,” Hebrews 11:1.  This Greek word, which can also be translated as “Reality,” designates an objective reality that is unquestionable and securely established.  God is good.  God loves me.  God is all powerful. Faith’s hope rests in these certainties, not in the circumstances which one may be facing.

eleyxos: “conviction,” Hebrews 11:1.  This Greek word must be understood in the objective sense of “proof or demonstration.”  This aspect of faith is forward looking, convinced in God’s ability to control the outcome before it takes place.

acuwk, “jar,” II Kings 4:2. This Hebrew word literally means “flask.”  This would have been a very small container of oil used for the purpose of anointing.
