Galatians

2015 October – February 2016

In this sermon series, we let Paul take us deep into the message of the cross. In the gospel, we discover we are more in need than we can imagine. However, we also discover the good news that through Christ we are far better off than we could possibly imagine. Through the cross, we have become sons and daughters. If we truly understand this freedom, it will lead to radical obedience and keeping in step with the Spirit. We learn how to walk in this joy and freedom.

“How Can You Turn Back?”, Galatians 4:8-20
Paul asks the Galatians, how can you turn back from the gospel and Christ? We learn we must examine ourselves to see if we have turned back. Like the Galatians, we sometimes turn away from the gospel in subtle ways. We also learn that we must be willing to speak the truth in love to others who have turned back from the gospel. Finally, we are reminded that God is a loving Father who is patient with us.

    Sons of God, Galatians 3:26-4:7
Everyone has a deep desire to be loved. Because of the Son of God, we can become sons of God and experience the love we need and crave. Our desire to be loved is satisfied through divine adoption. How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

Why Then the Law? Galatians 3:15-25
If we are justified by faith alone and we are cursed if we rely on works of the law (Gal 3:10), why did God give us the law? Are Christians expected to follow the law of God? We discover from God’s Word how Christians should think about the law.

    Christ Redeemed Us, Galatians 3:10-14
One of the ways we return to the gospel and keep it central is simply by talking about the gospel. The gospel includes bad news that we are all under a curse because of our sin. If we understand the problem, we are able to experience the good news of the gospel: Christ redeemed us from the curse by becoming a curse. As a result we receive the blessing promised to Abraham, which is the Spirit of adoption.

Who Has Bewitched You? Galatians 3:1-9
We are all prone to wander. Like the Galatians, we are capable of being bewitched. We discover several reasons why we should continue to return to the gospel and keep it central in all things. The gospel is the beginning, middle, and end of the faith, and it always has been and it always will be.

If we are saved by grace through faith in Christ alone, will this encourage sin and disobedience? What compels us to obey? Grace to You, Galatians 1:1-5
The book of Galatians has two major themes, and we see these themes in the introduction to the letter. First, we learn about the authority of the messenger. Paul had authority as an apostle, and his inspired writings are our authority today. If we disobey and disbelieve the Scripture, then we disobey and disbelieve God. Second, we learn about the good news of the message. We experience God’s grace and we become His sons and daughters because Jesus "gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age."
