In this sermon we focus on 1 Samuel 15, and we learn the common characteristics and patterns of rebellion, or sin, against the king.  First, rebellion is anything other than complete and immediate obedience.  Second, rebellion is driven by greed.  Third, rebellion is irrational and leads to more rebellion.  Finally, we look at Hebrews 10 and discover how our rebellion can be overcome.

    1 Samuel 2
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.  We see this theme in Hannah’s song and we see it throughout the chapter.  We learn how the priests are arrogant and how God brings them low in his wrath.  Samuel is an example of humility, and he is exalted and shown grace.  We discover how this text points forward to the King, and how God’s wrath and grace meet in a unique way at the cross.

    1 Samuel 1

Hannah is the main character in 1 Samuel 1 and we learn important kingdom principles from her.  First, God’s kingdom brings hope to the hopeless.  Hannah’s hopelessness is a picture of Israel’s spiritual barrenness and she is a picture of our need.  The good news is that God delights in bringing hope to us in our desperation.  Second, we learn God’s kingdom brings honor to the humble.  Hannah is a picture of humility that God honors, and we discover how this story points us to the ultimate example of humility.

    Applying the Gospel: Response

In the final sermon of this series, we talk about how we should respond to the gospel and we discover several benefits if we have responded to the gospel with faith.  If I am trusting in Christ, I have a new relationship, a new identity, and a new power.  We learn why this should encourage us and motivate us to live lives that are worthy of all God has done for us in the gospel.

    Applying the Gospel: Man

In this sermon, we focus on the second part of the gospel, man and his sin.  We discover several key principles we can draw out and apply to our lives.  We learn that we should value all people as God does, even when it’s difficult.  We learn that we deserve less, and so we live as people who are grateful and quick to show mercy.  We learn that we are in need, and why this should affect the way we live.  We talk about how God has met our need and how we can practically apply these great gospel truths.
