The Christmas Spirit

In this Christmas Day sermon, we look at Luke’s account of Christ’s birth. Throughout the sermon series, we have been talking about the particular spirit of Christmas we see in each text. Now we discover how we see each Christmas spirit in this text: humility, joy, peace, and love. Since God has given His Son, we are encouraged to practice each of these characteristics throughout the year.

We are commanded in scripture to rejoice always, and God’s desire is that we live a life full of joy. How can we live a life full of joy when we are so often consumed by busyness, stress, worry, doubts, loneliness, brokenness, and overwhelming burdens? We learn our joy is made complete in Jesus through fellowship with God and fellowship with other followers of Christ.

We see God’s love for us in the birth of His Son. We also see the proof of God’s love for us through His Son’s death. Just as God has loved us in a sacrificial way, so we should love one another. In fact, John says if we don’t love one another in this way we haven’t really experienced God’s love. We learn how and why we should practice this Christmas spirit of love.
