Applying the Gospel: Response

In the final sermon of this series, we talk about how we should respond to the gospel and we discover several benefits if we have responded to the gospel with faith.  If I am trusting in Christ, I have a new relationship, a new identity, and a new power.  We learn why this should encourage us and motivate us to live lives that are worthy of all God has done for us in the gospel.

    Applying the Gospel: Man

In this sermon, we focus on the second part of the gospel, man and his sin.  We discover several key principles we can draw out and apply to our lives.  We learn that we should value all people as God does, even when it’s difficult.  We learn that we deserve less, and so we live as people who are grateful and quick to show mercy.  We learn that we are in need, and why this should affect the way we live.  We talk about how God has met our need and how we can practically apply these great gospel truths.

    Applying the Gospel: God

In this sermon, we focus on the beginning of the gospel, God the King.  We discover several fundamental lessons from our text that we can apply to our lives.  For example, God is King and I am not.  Also, God is in control and He is good.  We learn practically how to take these gospel truths about God and apply them to real life challenges and struggles we face every day.

    Christmas in Revelation
    Revelation 12
When we look at the birth of Jesus we often turn to Matthew or Luke.  But in this sermon we discover that the Christmas story is also found in the book of Revelation.  We see there is a war involving a dragon that takes place behind the scenes of the nativity.  We are encouraged as we learn why we can be confident in the battle that continues to this day.

    Life and Death
In this text we see four images that help us develop God’s perspective on life and death. The first image is an offering, and we learn we are called to live our lives as a sacrifice. The second image is a departure, and we are encouraged that there is life after death. The third image is a race, and we are called to keep running and endure to the end. The final image is a reward, and we are reminded that following Christ to the end is worth it!

    Truth
    2 Timothy 4:1-5
In this sermon, we discover the problem is that we are naturally inclined to gravitate away from the truth toward error.  We talk about why this happens and what this downward process involves.  We also discover the solution to this problem.  We ask and answer the big questions about how to combat falsehood and darkness with truth and light.

    Enduring
In this passage and sermon we are called to endure. We have all started new projects or hobbies that we have eventually quit. We often have a similar temptation in our faith to slow down or even quit. We learn from this text several keys for enduring the race set before us.

    Evil
Evil is a term that has become less popular because it is a theological term that implies moral absolutes. In this sermon, we learn a biblical perspective of evil. We discover that evil is often subtle and quick to spread. We talk about the root of evil, the marks of evil, the response to evil, and the limits of evil.

    Ephesians 2:1-10
This year we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.  The greatest contribution of this movement was that God’s people returned to God’s Word and therefore the gospel.  In this sermon from Ephesians 2:1-10, we focus on the material issue of the Reformation: how a person becomes right with God.  We are reminded that we are saved by God’s grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone.

    Thinking
In this sermon, we talk about right thinking. Unfortunately, many people believe we have to ignore rationality and logic in order to have faith. But God has given us a mind and we are supposed to use it as we love God with our mind. We look at the call to right thinking, the importance of right thinking, and practical steps we can take to develop a Christian mind.

    Suffering
One of the major themes of this letter is suffering. We are exposed to many unhealthy perspectives of suffering. Some say suffering is just an illusion. Some say if we are righteous and faithful then God won’t allow us to suffer. Some say God can’t be good since there is so much suffering. Some try to ignore suffering by self-medicating. We discover from God’s Word how we should think about suffering and why our present suffering shouldn’t drive us to despair.

    Commitment
In 2 Timothy 2:1-7, Paul encourages Timothy to stand strong and be committed to the gospel ministry. He uses the image of a soldier, athlete, and farmer to help illustrate what faithful ministry involves. We learn that commitment is difficult, necessary, and rewarding. Following Jesus often involves traveling a difficult road, but the road is worth it because it leads to life.

    Gospel
In this sermon we learn there is both an offensive and defensive aspect to the gospel and to gospel ministry. We are called to advance the gospel using the pattern of sound words we have been given. We are also called to defend the gospel, which means being willing to state explicitly what the gospel is and what the gospel is not. We discover that advancing and defending the gospel begins in our own hearts and homes before we can faithfully do this work in our community and world.
